São Paulo has been actively implementing a series of environmental initiatives aimed at enhancing urban sustainability and resilience. These efforts encompass substantial investments, policy reforms, and community engagement strategies.
Significant Investments in Climate Action
The city has committed to investing R$ 122.2 billion between 2026 and 2029 in climate action initiatives. This funding is allocated to projects such as expanding green spaces, increasing the fleet of electric buses, and developing new parks and eco-parks, positioning São Paulo as a leader in urban sustainability in Latin America.
Preservation of Green Areas
In a move to protect its natural heritage, the city declared approximately 165 km² of private land as public utility areas dedicated to environmental preservation. These areas, rich in Atlantic Forest remnants, streams, and springs, are considered invaluable for maintaining ecological balance and biodiversity.
Launch of the ‘Pacote Verde’
On World Environment Day, the city introduced the ‘Pacote Verde,’ a comprehensive plan focusing on sustainability and climate resilience. The plan includes planting 120,000 trees, creating new conservation units, modernizing waste collection fleets with biogas-powered vehicles, and expanding urban forests. These actions aim to enhance the city’s green infrastructure and promote environmental awareness among residents.
Community Engagement through ‘São Paulo pelo Clima’
The ‘São Paulo pelo Clima’ movement mobilizes volunteers and communities to develop sustainable actions across the city. Activities include tree planting, cleanup drives, composting workshops, and educational seminars on recycling and climate change. This initiative fosters a culture of environmental responsibility and active participation among citizens.
Partnerships for Park Improvement
The city renewed its partnership with UN-Habitat through the ‘Viva o Verde SP’ program, entering its second phase. This collaboration focuses on implementing recommendations from the initial phase, such as developing management plans for parks, requalifying green spaces, and creating digital tools to enhance park management and public engagement. The program emphasizes inclusive participation, particularly encouraging the involvement of women and girls in the design and management of public spaces.
Through these multifaceted initiatives, São Paulo demonstrates a robust and ongoing commitment to environmental sustainability, aiming to create a more resilient and livable urban environment for all its residents.
