São Paulo’s Economic Resilience: A Closer Look at Recent Growth and Employment Trends

São Paulo’s economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth in recent times, underscoring its position as a pivotal economic hub in Brazil. The state’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) experienced a 2.5% increase over the past 12 months, driven predominantly by a 3.5% expansion in the services sector, which constitutes nearly 70% of the state’s economic activity. This growth rate surpasses the national average of 2.2% during the same period.

In the realm of employment, the city of São Paulo achieved a historic low in unemployment rates. The first quarter of 2025 saw the unemployment rate drop to 5.8%, the lowest since 2012. This figure is notably better than the national unemployment rate of 7% and the state average of 6.2%. Such positive employment trends are indicative of a robust labor market and a thriving local economy.

Entrepreneurship has also flourished in São Paulo. Between 2021 and 2025, the city witnessed the establishment of 869,004 new businesses. Additionally, 89,840 companies relocated to São Paulo from other municipalities during this period, highlighting the city’s attractiveness as a business destination. In 2025 alone, 185,121 new companies were registered, and 15,616 businesses moved to the capital, contributing significantly to the local economy.

Supporting this entrepreneurial surge are initiatives like the Black Embassy, an accelerator and incubator for Black entrepreneurship. Established through collaboration between the Alok Institute and the Feira Preta Institute, the Black Embassy serves as a hub for creativity and innovation, providing essential infrastructure for the digital transformation of Black-owned businesses. This initiative underscores the city’s commitment to fostering inclusive economic growth and supporting diverse entrepreneurial ventures.

These developments collectively paint a picture of São Paulo as a dynamic and resilient economic center, characterized by robust growth, declining unemployment, and a vibrant entrepreneurial ecosystem. The city’s ability to attract new businesses and support diverse initiatives reflects its ongoing commitment to economic development and inclusivity.
